Production and Logging

  • It is difficult to identify landowners due to generational changes of forest owners and villages without people living there. (Forests with no information such as the owner’s address and name, land area, etc. account for about 25% of the total forest area owned. One example of searching for ownership information took 15 months to identify.)
  • Domestic timber has been illegally shipped overseas due to illegal logging.

The use of a distributed ledger system to share data between landowners and forestry workers could be expected to increase the efficiency of identification of production sites, cultivation periods, owners, and forestry workers in the supply chain.(It would reduce information identification time and confirm ownership information) Furthermore, if lot numbers could be managed by labeling management IDs on timber, the distribution of timber logged illegally could be prevented.

Transportation/ Inventory Management

  • Intensification of forest operations is an issue.
  • Stabilizing the supply of products with reliable quality and performance is difficult.

By introducing a distributed ledger system to the timber distribution channel and sharing data among stakeholders, timber management and data linkage with domestic and overseas delivery destinations will be actualized. Recording the details of when and where it was grown as well as who grew, transported, and processed it, sharing solid information on timber and processed products becomes possible. Additionally, traceability that identifies distribution channels and manages inventory is achieveable. Excess inventory reduction and inventory / distribution management efficiency can then be expected.

By realizing efficient operation and stable timber management, it is possible to prevent the outflow of unspecified large numbers, such as through the identification of distribution channels from illegal logging. An additional goal is to create a sustainable production and consumption circulation structure by centrally managing distribution and inventory management in the supply chain.
